About Me - photobirding

Who am I?

I have been taking pictures of nature .... mostly birds since I retired 9 years ago. I love being in nature and photography gives me an excuse to get out as often as I can. My main focus is birds and I'm learning more about birding each year, but rather than just counting, I prefer to bring a record back of what I saw. Combining birding with photography- I call myself a 'Photobirder'.

Where do I get my pictures?

Things would be a lot more interesting if I could travel more, however circumstances temporarily confine me to South-eastern Ontario and mostly the Bay of Quinte Region.

This region has a few excellent areas for birding and bird photography including Prince Edward Point IBA and Presqu'ile Provincial Park.

Hopefully some trips South and West will increase my list, but I'm not really a 'lister' and I am relatively happy with the 300 species that I have captured in this region.

In the summer when the birds are scarce I turn to Insect Photography mostly Odonates.

Lately I have been doing more Landscapes and even starting to play with Astrophotography. I also have lot's of Family stuff but this is protected in the 'Family' section.

I'm a Nikon guy. I didn't actually make an informed choice when I bought my first Nikon DSLR 5 years ago, the D5000 just happened to be the one on sale. I have never regretted that choice especially now with the incredible new Nikon Cameras.

Current Gear.

Bodies - Nikon D750 and Nikon D7100

Lenses - My primary lens for wildlife photography is the new 300mm f4 PF VR G. This lens is light, compact and incredibly sharp. I keep it on the D7100 to utilize the 'crop' factor for wildlife.

Many pictures on this website were taken with it's predecessor the non VR 300mm f4 D.

I use the full frame D750 for landscapes and portraits. This is brand new and not many images posted yet.

Also in my bag.
